Have we imprisoned ourselves in three dimensions?

Is reality (the world we live in) just what our minds tell us is real, or could there be multiple alternative realities existing simultaneously? Quantum Physicists believe there could, and that parallel universes could exist less than one millimetre away from us. In fact they suggest that our gravity is just a weak signal leaking out of another universe into ours!

We normally think of ourselves as living in a three-dimensional world where we can move in three ways: left or right, up or down, forwards and backwards, but now we are told there may be eleven dimensions - hidden worlds beyond our human senses - a multiverse full of unexplained happenings and strange visions - just like this film then! 

Imagination is limitless - it doesn't have to make sense. 

By not having a specific narrative the film allows the viewer to interpret in their own way, according to his or her own experiences. There is a school of thought that the viewer's interpretation of any form of art is actually more important than that of the creator. I'm not sure I agree entirely with that, but I like my films to be abstract enough to show intent, but that the intent is subtle enough to allow the viewer's interpretational filters to go to work.

The first few years of my life were spent in a place that seemed to be almost a million miles from the sea.

But once my grandparents moved to a small southern coastal town, my summer holidays became very different as they were spent almost exclusively with them.

This short film includes some fleeting visions from my childhood recollections.

Memories of the mesmerising, playful, calm, but sometimes turbulent, terrifying and all powerful sea.

Visions of a drowning woman

In mythology creatures from the deep were often the most powerful, and the sirens especially symbolic of the sea's dichotomy.

Water is both the giver of life and the destroyer, and as companions to Persephone, the sirens were the epitome of this strength with their mesmeric, enchanting and bewitching ways in luring seafarers to the depths.

 The siren dances for the drowning woman, but the woman survived.

We remembered tomorrow and were glad to have left when we did.

"Escape" is a semi serious look into the future with a retro feel harking back to 1960's sci-fi.

A comment on the possible extreme effects of global warming and flooded cities way into the future past.

"I Turned and Walked Away" shown at MOMA

Following on from a screening of "dreaming" (a short film collaboration with Koo Bhangra) in Tate Britain a few years ago, "I Turned Around and Walked Away" was shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in September as part of the exhibition "Facets of Figuration".

The film has also been shown as part of the Big Screen Project in Manhattan and at the "Untitled" Magazine's "Voyeur" exhibitions in Miami, New York and Paris.
