It is centred around the lighthouse which stood next to St Catherine's Oratory on St.Catherine's Down on the south coast of the Isle of Wight.

St.Catherine of Alexandria was martyred in the early 4th Century by the pagan emperor Maxentius and was reputedly one of the Saints who appeared to Joan of Arc.

The lighthouse was erected by Walter de Godeton who was a local landowner condemned by the Church for plundering casks of wine, bound for the monastery in Picardy, from a shipwreck off Chale Bay in 1313. It was completed in 1328 the year after his death.
